The pancreas
- Is both endocrine and exocrine endocrine (hormones) - islets of langerhans - produces hormones
- Islets of langerhans are clusters of pancreatic cells that sense blood sugar
levels and release insulin to maintain normal levels
- System: Digestive
- Location: Behind the stomach and level with the top of the small intestine
- Physical description: Pistol-shape
- Function: Secreting digestive enzymes and hormones that control blood sugar levels
- Hormones
- Insulin - put sugar into storage in muscles = stored energy
- If someone injects themselves with insulin but they have
not eaten (no sugar for storage) you could go into a diabetic
coma - will look drunk, shaky and slur their words
- Glucagon - pulls out of storage = energy
- Contra indications
