   1. Sailed down coast of south america spent winter months in port st julian
      1. Spanish men didn't like being commanded by a Portuguese they revolted Magellan crushed the attempted mutiny
         1. soon after one of his ships Santiago was wrecked during a storm the crew made it safely back to port st julian

1. San Antonio deserted and returned to spain
   1. Reached pacific ocean ran out of food over 100 men died of scurvy
      1. Reached a group of islands got involved in tribal war
         1. On April 26th 1521 Magellan was killed in battle
            1. Remaining crew sailed on to the spice islands
               1. On September 1522 the Trinidad captained by Sebastian del cano with 18 survivors on board reached spain. they were all that remained of 270 men
                  1. they were the first to sail around the world
