Clinical Characteristics
of Schizophrenia
- Positive - change/addition to norm/ beh/ or
thoughts e.g. hallucinations, delusions,
distorted thoughts, disorganised speech
- Negative - withdrawal/lack of function
compared to healthy person. E.g. emotionless,
flat, apathetic, withdraw socially
- Symptoms - 1 month (ICD), 6 months (DSM)
- Not due to organic brain disease, alcohol/drug
related intoxication or meet criteria for depression
- Generally develops early adult, men + women equally
effected - peak age onset women, 5-10yrs later/men
- Episodic disorder - periods psychotic disturbance interspersed
w/ norm/ functioning. Active psy/ ep/s = 1 month-1 year
- Lack of agreement SZ outcomes. Recent longitudinal
studies = 2/3rds substantial recovery (Johnstone, 1991)
