Moulding
- Line bending
- Heating a thermoplastic in a concentrated line
- Used with jigs and formers
- This makes it accurate and
identical each time
- Vacuum forming
- Uses thermoplastic materials in the form of
sheets
- Examples- shop signs, dashboards, etc
- Pattern must have tapered/chamfered
edges, a smooth surface and rounded
corners
- Injection moulding
- Granules of
thermoplastic are fed
through the funnel into the
heater which turns the
plastic into a liquid state. It
is then quickly forced
under pressure, like an
injection into the mould.
Once cool, the mould is
separated to release the
product.
- Injection moulding
uses pressure to
mould plastics
- The moulds are
often made from
tool steel which
can be very
expensive
- This many should be made to
make it profitable
- Examples- chairs,
bottle caps, etc
- Blow moulding
- Process to shape plastic and glass
- Examples- bottles, jars and containers
- Polythene is
commonly used
