B7: The Heart
- Right Atrium
- Receives deoxygenated blood
from the body (through the vena cava).
- Right Ventricle
- Pumps the deoxygenated blood to
the lungs (via the pulmonary artery).
- Left Atrium
- Receives oxygenated blood from the
lungs (through the pulmonary vein).
- Left Ventricle
- Pumps the oxygenated blood
around the body (via the aorta)
- The wall of the left ventricle is thicker than that on the
right, as it has to pump blood all the way around the
body, as oppose to just the lungs.
- Valves
- Prevent backflow of blood - veins
also have valves for this reason
