        1. The Data Protection Act 1998
          1. This Act specifies the rules about collecting and holding data.
            1. data must be accurate and up to date
              1. data must be kept secure
                1. data can only be used for the purpose for which it was collected
                  1. data must not be retained for longer than necessary
                    1. Not transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEC) without adequate protection
                      1. data must be adequate, relevant and not excessive
                        1. data must be processed fairly and lawfully
                      2. Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988
                        1. Copyright law protects the owner of a creative work from having it illegally copied
                          1. Stops authors' work being scammed, and means that authors get the credit they deserve
                            1. Its hard to catch offenders
                              1. Some people don't realise what they're doing is illegal
                              2. Computer Misuse Act 1990
                                1. Designed to prosecute hackers who gain access to computer systems without consent Software developers should not create programs that are capable of gaining unauthorised access to other programs or data
                                  1. Hold hackers accountable for their actions.
                                    1. Prevents users using computers in an abusive way
                                      1. Protects any unauthorised access to any computer
                                        1. Many people do not agree with these laws
                                          1. Someone could have violated this act by accident, and therefore be unjustly accused of breaking the law
                                          2. Freedom of Information Act 2000
                                            1. In 2000, a new law was passed to give people access to data held by public authorities This includes state schools, police forces, local authorities and the NHS It does not give access to personal data about people
                                              1. --The officials in the government are kept honest because what they do can be made public
                                                1. taught government officials how they should be communicating properly and effectively
                                                  1. The public is kept knowledgeable about the actions of its government
                                                    1. The release of certain information could jeopardize international relationships
                                                      1. The release of other information could affect the conduct of negotiations.
                                                        1. If tactical information were released it could put our troops in harms' way.
                                                        2. Creative Commons Licence
                                                          1. A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created.
                                                            1. "Free Advertising" License - allows others to do the duplication and re-distribution for you
                                                              1. Protection from people modifing your work if they use, (must be used ""verbatim"")
                                                                1. in order to preserve the original integrity of the work
                                                                  1. Protects you from people selling anything using your work and not paying you for it
                                                                    1. Nicer to use a license that lets you keep your options open.
                                                                      1. Non-commercial option too restrictive for Professions who are already planning on selling their creations.
                                                                        1. You are shutting yourself off from having your works used in creative projects if you don't allow derivative works.
                                                                          1. No Derivative works option may be too restrictive if artist isn't sure how their work is going to come out in the end (as potentially a derivative work).
                                                                            1. Non-commercial option too restrictive for artists who might want to stay open to making money on the work in the future or are just plain unsure what exactly they will be doing with their finished product
                                                                              1. Derivative works are the hottest thing going right now. "remixes" and "mashups" are a great way to gain exposure for you as an artist.
