Spanish Civil War - CAUSES
- In the time period before the Civil War, Spain loved to fight.
- Between 1806 and 1936 - there
were 19 military coups
- Some Spaniards answered to Rome (Catholics), some
wanted the central gov't to control everything, and others
wanted a monarchy
- Mainly : conservatives vs.
liberals
- 1886 - Don Pablo begins advocating
for an anarchy revolution. The idea
spread..
- Anarchism went underground after police fired on anarchists.
- Harder to police...
- turned into single acts of terrorism.
- 20th century - workers began to strike.
- this really only led to arrests, violence, and hostility towards the church.
- The workers wanted to form a confederation of labor.
- Spain said no, sent troops to strike them down
- The Rich people of Spain owned
most of the land, causing unrest in
rural areas.
- Led to unrest and violence
- Unrest made people radicals
- Some joined socialist union, others turned
to anarchism etc.

- CATHOLICISM
- Spain was Catholic, and the gov't
was aligned with the church.
- Church was alarmed by radical attacks.
- After so many
military coups, Spain
reduced the size of
their army
- After a loss in Morocco, they
turned back to a large military
who oppressed civilians
- A strong separatist movement remained in Spain.
- Spain was divided.
- And so was Europe -
Communism vs.
Fascism.
- This increased foreign
interest in Spanish War.

- Farm probs.
- Land owners had a hard time
under new regime because of
labor laws
- Countryside became a battle ground.
- CITY probs
- Army continued to beat
down strikes.
- Communists and
Anarchists worked
together to fight
police.
- Religious probs
- Church hated
new reform
- Lost money, religious items
were removed
- By 1936 Spain was divided.
- Former Finance Minister - Sotelo
- killed (right wing) - The perfect
spark for war.
- Prompted military coup by Sanjuro, Maro and Fransisco Franco.
