- Rationing used in both wars.
- During WW1, rationing was introduced in 1918.
- Used much more in WW2 -
food, clothes and petrol
were all rationed.
- Food imports were down by
50% in WW2.
- Started in Jan 1940
- Everyone issued with
Ration Book and had a
certain number of coupons.
- Caused many people to
buy food on the black
market, at inflated prices.
- Dig for Victory
- Encouraged people to dig up lawns
and parks to grow food.
- By the end of 1942, the number of allotments had
doubled to 1.5 million.
- Make Do and Mend
- People had to use the materials and
clothes they already had. New dresses
could be made out of a pair of curtains.

- In WW2, Women could be conscripted.
- 90% of single women had a job in WW2.
