The Kidney
- Excretion: The removal of
waste products of
metabolism from the
body
- The nephron is the structural
and functional part of the
kidney
- Urea is formed from
excess protein in the
liver
- Anti diuretic hormone(ADH) is
released for the pituitary gland if it
detects low water content in the
blood. Acts on the distal convoluted
tubule and collecting duct
- Filtration occurs in the
glomerulus and produces
glomerular filtrate
- Reabsorption occurs in the
proximal convoluted tubule
- Glucose, amino acids and salts are
absorbed from the glomerular filtrate into
the efferent arteriole by active transport
- Reabsorption continues in the loop of
henle, distal convoluted tubule and
collecting duct.
- Secretion of H+ ions if blood is too acidic can
also take place here
- What ever
remains in the
collecting duct
(urine) passes
through the pelvis
in the kidney and
goes into the
bladder via the
ureter
