Religious Conflicts
in Families
- Arranged marriages
- Muslims assist their children
in finding suitable marriage
partners
- This can cause problems when the children want to
choose their marriage partner, or even if they want to
marry at all, or if they are homosexual
- Same-sex relationships
- Some religions, like Islam, believe
homosexual relationships are wrong
- This causes problems if a family
member realises they are gay
- Dress code
- Some religions - like Islam - have rules about
dressing modestly
- Muslim parents would
never allow their child to
wear sexually provocative
clothes - it is against the
rules of the Qur'an - and
this can cause problems if
the child wants to dress like
their peers do
- Diet
- Religions like Islam and Judaism have dietary rules set out in
their holy books
- In Islam and Judaism, bacon and pork is forbidden; Islams
have halal meat instead
- This causes problems if the child wants
to eat these foods but is forbidden to by
their parents/ religion
- Authority
- Many religions have rules about authority within families. In religions like Christianity and
Islam, children are taught to respect their parents
- In Islam, the father is seen as the
head of the household
- In Christianity, respect is important but only some traditional
Christians would have the father as the head of the household.
Most Christians believe the parents have equal authority
- It can cause problems in multi-faith families, where the children aren't sure
who is the main source of authority
- Religion
- Multi-faith families have problems with this as each parent
wants to bring the child up in their religion
- The children of a religious family may feel they have
been forced into their religious upbringing and want to
convert to a different religion. This can cause
problems if their family don't accept their wish
- Children may not want to have a religion, they
might want to choose to be atheists
- Sexual relationships
- Muslims and some Christians are
taught that pre-marital sex is wrong. If
their child wants to cohabit or have
sex before marriage with their
partner, there can be problems as
their parents won't accept or allow it
- Contraception can be a problem between multi-faith couples when
Catholics are taught that artificial conception is wrong
- Traditional roles
- Traditionalists in Christianity and Islam
believe the woman's job is as a
homemaker, whereas the man should
go to work
- This can cause conflicts between multi-faith couples in today's society where
these roles are more flexible and single-parent families are common
