Referred Pain
- Pain perceived in a location other than the site of the painful
stimulus or pain that is present in an area removed or distant
from its point of origin
- Also known as reflective pain
- Referred visceral pain is
carried by second order
neurons that travel in the
contralateral spinothalmic tracts
- The area of referred pain is supplied by the
same spinal segment as the actual site of
pain becuase impulses from many
cutaneous and visceral neurons converge
- The presumed mechanism is one of afferent fibres from
this conjoint area in the spinal cord, relaying the mistaken
perception that the pain arises from the referral site.
