MULTI-STORE MEMORY
(ATKINSON AND SHIFFRIN)
- This theory describes memory consisting of three
separate stores: Sensory memory, Short-term
memory and long term memory
- Sensory Memory - is a buffer for all
the information received. This store
holds sensory memory for a brief
period until we decide to give it
attention and transfer it to short-term
memory
- Short-term memory is a limited store for information that has been
paid attention to. It is believed that it can store around 7 pieces of
information for around 18-30 seconds. Rehearsal is used to hold
information for a longer duration increasing the liklihood of it being
transferred into Long-term memory.
- Long-term memory is
potentially infinite and can
hold memories for a few
minutes or years.
