Light and Space - For Summer Yr 8 Exams
- Light travels at 300,000 Kilometers
- The sun is 150 million km away
- Takes 500 seconds or 8 minutes to get to Earth
- Light travels in straight lines
- Nothing can go faster than light
- Transparent
- Light passes through E.G Glass
- Transmits the light through
- We see objects
because they reflect
light from a light
source into our eyes
- Opaque
- Light cannot go through it E.G Wood
- Absorbs the light
- Some Reflect the light E.G Mirrors
- When you look into a mirror you see an almost perfect reflection
- This is called seeing an image of yourself
- Translucent
- Lets a bit of light through but you cant so a clear image through it
- E.G Thin Plastics and tracing paper
- Scatters the light so when you look through it you can only see some of the light going through - Thus the 'clouded' image through it
- Space
- Sources of light
- Stars (Mainly the Sun for us)
- Objects that produce their own light are called luminous
- Fires
- Light bulbs
- Bio-luminescent algae
- Combustion
- As planets and star are so far away we use telescopes to see them
- Telescopes have lenses that are
magnified, so when you look through its
magnifiedso you can see stuff that are
far away
- The Seasons
- As the Earth axis
- The moon does not produce light, it reflects the sun light at Earth
- The moon has phases as the
moon orbits around the Earth and
blocks the light at different points
so we only see certain parts of the
moon that have light
