  1. Substansive
    1. MUST have certain content- belief in God
      1. Can explain purpose of existance
        1. WEBER (1905) Religion is a belief in a superior or supernatural power
          1. Western Bias- excludes beliefs that perform a similar function but do not believe in a God
            1. Narrowly focused- only focuses on God not the funtion of the religion
              1. Cannot be explained scientifically
              2. Functional
                1. DURKHEIM- furthers social cohesion
                  1. Defines religion through societal function
                    1. Inclusive- no religious content
                      1. YINGER (1970) identifies functions such as answering 'ultimate questions' about life/death
                        1. Too broad- many non-religious belief systems are concerned with the explanation of the human condition
                          1. E.g. Science and philosphy
                          2. 'CIvil religion' is sometimes used when something has a quasi-religious effect
                          3. Social constructist
                            1. Not one definition as religion is a social construct
                              1. Measures religiousity- how religious on a personal level
                                1. Definitions influenced by power
                                  1. ALDERIDGE (2007) Scientology- followers believe it but others (E.g. Governments reject it
                                    1. DURKHEIM & MARX- Religion is a product to explain the unexplainable to bring communities together and justify power inequalities
