DUFF AND PURPOSE
OF TRANSLATION
- Duff (1989) identifies three essential purposes of translation as an activity
in language learning: accuracy, clarity and flexibility. He argues that
translation “trains the learner to search (flexibility) for the most
appropriate words (accuracy) to convey what is meant (clarity).
- ACCURACY
- Accuracy: the condition or quality of
being true, correct, or exact; freedom
from error or defect; precision or
exactness; correctness.
- this help the learner to expand the
vocabulary that possess and also the
learner can have a more sophisticated
vocabulary to express himself.
- CLARITY
- clearness or lucidity as to perception or
understanding; freedom from indistinctness
or ambiguity
- the translator need to convert the idea that the author is plastering in the
text, an ambiguous translation can be interpreted in many forms.
- FLEXIBILITY
- Flexibility: susceptible of
modification or adaptation;
adaptable
- the learner can adapt to different situations in the real life
where he needs to have a vast vocabulary to express
himself in an appropriate form.
