• Performance Task It is 1626. You are an adventurer hired by a rich European investor to explore Virginia and report back your findings, so the investor can decide upon the best place to settle. You have hired two Powhatan Scouts, who between them can speak English, their native Algonquian, two different dialects of Sioux, and enough Iroquoian to make themselves understood. This will help you find out more information by talking to European settlers and native Indian tribes who already live in the places you visit. The First Virginia Charter gave residents of the First Colony at Jamestown the rights to claim all land within 50 miles of the colony, so you will not bother exploring the James and the York Rivers. However, you will be able to explore the Chesapeake Bay, the northwest section of the Rappahannock River, the Atlantic Coast, the Potomac River, and the southern part of the Dismal Swamp and Lake Drummond.You will need to report on the relative location, geographic features, climate, the natural resources available in the area to use for survival and to make money (plants, animals, possible minerals,) existing inhabitants, possible dangers, and the best way to get there from the investor’s home in England for each location you scout. After visiting each location, studying the land, and speaking with any settlers there, you will complete a report for your investor to be taken to the nearest port that has a ship sailing for England.
