- thin strips of wood, glued together
- veneers
- each strip is glued with the grain running at a right angle to the previous one
- appearance can be improved by covering it in high- quality hardwood venneers
- Blockboard
- strips of softwood sandwiched between 'plies'
- the grain of the plies runs at right angles to the softwood strips
- Chipboard
- small chips of wood squeezed and glued together
- appearance improved by hardwood veneers or a thin layer of plastic
- cheap with rough surface
- kitchen worktops
- renewable materials
- if managed sustainably, it will never run out
- reclaimed wood
- good quality wood can be re-used
- wood can also be recycled
- e.g. for making manufacture boards
- or just burned as fuel, to produce energy
