 - The First Americans Some came to the Americas via the Bering Strait (Siberia to Alaska) or used paddle boats and canoes to travel along the coast. Didn't refer to themselves as "Americans". The term was a thing until Europeans migrated around 15,000 years ago. Coming to America Most believed that the first migrants came to America approx. 35,000 years ago and continued until 14,000 years ago Two hemispheres were the North and South Americas Different conclusions about the migrating patterns of early migrants Believed that people reached Chile around 10,000 years ago at least Subsistence Strategies and the Development of Agriculture Foraged for fish, leaves, eggs, insects, lizards and fruits, along with hunting and trapping game Animal proteins included deer, foxes, gophers, rabbits and tortoises Hunter-gatherers moved from place to place based on not only the seasons but the availability of food and game Aside from food, foraging provided various fibers that were used for basket making, clothes/blankets/shelters, fishnets, medicine, dyes and hallucinogens Learned that they were able to plant seeds at a desirable location and return at a later time for harvesting.
