Chapter I: NotesA running commentary on this chapter, with observations(points, or topics), quotes(proof and reference) and level 1 and up, on meaning (interpretations). Context (Historical, Scientific) may also feature.
"He didn't say more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that." -Nick, On Nick's Father.Nick and his father, have "always" been able to speak in subtle undertones with each other, being "communicative in a reserved way". They pass meaning and messages and understanding in their language at a deeper than normal level. Which is what the word "reserved", usually utilized in regards to depth of personality being hidden, suggests.
"In my more vulnerable years", communicates that in these years, Nick is impressionable: open to suggestions that he will believe or follow that he would not have necessarily done had they been introduced when he was established as an adult. The use of past tense also gives the suggestion that Nick Carraway believes that he is an adult, and therefore un-impressionable, not vulnerable to suggestion, anymore. As a narrator, this belief is important to keep in mind for the reader.
