I dreamed a dream - Les misérables listening activity

The students may watch the trailer of the film to learn about the plot of the movie and context of the song. The video contains very few spoken sentences, so it is only meant to work as an introductory, quick activity. After watching the students may reply to the following questions:   Do you know this movie? Have you watched it? What do you think is the main plot of the movie? From what you can see in the video, what do you think happens to Fantine (Anne Hathaway's character)? From what you can see in the video, what do you think happens to Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman's character)?

The verbs in brackets are in the present tense. Can you turn them into past tense? Listen to the song and check your answers. There _____ (is) a time when men _____ (are) kind When their voices ____ (are) soft And their words inviting There _____ (is) a time when love _____ (is) blind And the world _____ (is) a song And the song _____ (is) exciting There ____ (is) a time Then it all _____ (go) wrong I _______ (dream) a dream in time gone by When hope _____ (is) high and life worth living I _________(dream) that love would never die I _________(dream) that God would be forgiving Then I ______ (am) young and unafraid And dreams ______ (are) made and used and wasted There ______ (is) no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame He _______ (sleep) a summer by my side He _______ (fill) my days with endless wonder He _______  (take) my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn _______ (come) And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I ______ (have) a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it _______ (seem) Now life has killed the dream I ________ (dream)
