Four Hormones control the menstrual cycle, these are: FSH, LH, Oestrogen and ProgesteroneFSH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone is produced in the pituitary gland, travelling to the ovaries to stimulate the growth of follicles and maturing of the ovum. This then stimulates the release of oestrogen from the ovaries.Oestrogen is secreted by the ovaries so that the uterus lining thickens in preparation for an embryo to implant(pregnancy). It then stimulates the production of LH from the pituitary gland and more release of FSH.LH or Luteinising Hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and releases an egg from the ovary(ovulation). This occurs at about Day 14 of the cycle. It then stimulates the release of Progesterone from the ovaries as the follicle breaks down.Progesterone causes the uterus lining to support the embryo. It inhibits the production of FSH and starts the cycle again, if the egg is fertilized. If not, then the level of progesterone falls, FSH is produced and menstruation occurs again.
