Outline and Evaluate the learning theory of attachment (12 marks)The learning theory of attachment suggests that attachment is learnt. This can happen through classical conditioning or operant conditioning. In classical conditioning the unconditioned stimulus, in this case food is given to the baby. The unconditioned response would be 'happy baby.' Over time the neutral stimulus (mum) gives the unconditioned stimulus (food) to the baby to get an unconditioned response (happy baby.) This is repeated over time and the conditioned stimulus (mum) can make the baby happy (conditioned response.) The association the baby makes with the mum and food creates the attachment. The operant conditioning explains the attachment through reinforcement. The hungry baby needs food (primary reinforcer) to make them happy however in order to get the food they seek for the secondary reinforcer (mum). Attachment is formed from the seeking out for the secondary reinforcer.
