Role of the Father What I Remember (WIR)The father has possible role as secondary care giver as mother is PCG. Recent studies, however, have shown fathers are capable of being a PCG. They are seen primarily as play mates for the child.
There has been a massive shift in the role of the father. They can be; gay/straight, adoptive/step, divorced/single. Industrialisation meant fathers became distanced and there was a rise in single mothers and abandoned children. Then recently the rise of women in work, 33-60% across 20th century led to an increase in the amount of hours fathers spent with their children.NICHD conducted study and found psychologically healthy, fathers who worked below average hours and had a partner who worked above average levels, and had boys spent more time with their children. This bonding time has a positive effect on the cognitive development of children.
reciprocity- turn taking between the mother and infant in interactions that leads to them copying each other .Interactional Synchrony- behaviours such as smiling that the mother and baby do together at the same time.
ReciprocityThe word reciprocal means two-way, or something that is mutual. Infant and caregiver are both active contributors in the interaction and are responding to each other. This is referred to as reciprocity.Interactional synchrony The word synchrony means a simultaneous action or occurrence. Interactional synchrony relates to the timing and pattern of the interaction. Real-life Application- when a child is transferred from foster parents to their adoptive parents; it is important that the new parents make an attempt to mirror the babies faces and behaviours to create the reciprocity that would normally occur straight after birth and improve attachment.
