Precursors to Cubism

Fauvism: a French style of painting derived by early twentieth century modern artists whose works emphasised strong colours that hold emotive qualities opposed to depicting a realistic image that Impressionism posed. Important Fauvist artists include Henri Matisse, who painted Woman with a Hat, in 1905.  Fauvism was "Concerned with the emotional impact of pure colour"  

Paul Cézanne: 1839-1906 Central subject matter was Mont Sainte Victoire  Simplified bjects, and looked at the underlying structure of reality.  "Everything in nature in modelled after the sphere, the cone, the cylinder. One must learn to paint these from simple figures" - Paul Cezanne  Space is flattened with the aid of small patches of colour.  'The Father of Modern Painting' Unified his composition
