Example:
Maria likes Tom.
If we change the nouns to pronouns we get...
Maria is the subject.
Maria is a woman.
There is only one Maria. so...
Maria likes Tom.
Tom isn't the subject.
Tom is a man.

different way.

Tom is the subject of the sentence.
