What do Earthquakes Cause?
Shock waves, they travel on the surface and inside earth. We record them with Seismographs.
Ocean Trenches.
What Two Types of Waves are there.
P-Waves and S-Waves
D-waves and M-waves
Explain P-Waves
They go through Solids and Liquids. They are faster than S-Waves. They are Longitudinal.
They only travel through Solids. They are Slower. They Are Transverse.
Explain S-Waves
What happens to waves when they reach different layers of earth?
They reflect, Sometimes
They go init.
Do waves Change Speed?
Yes, as the properties of the Mantle and Core change, it causes them to also change direction slightly - This is Refraction
Nope.
Is the speed Change of waves Gradual?
A lot of the time, it is, so it's got a curved path. But when the properties change suddenly, speed changes abruptly and so does Direction.
No its sudden.
What do P-waves tell us about The Mantle and Core.
P-Waves change direction abruptly about halfway down into earth, showing a sudden change in properties.
Nuffin.
S-waves are not detected in the core's shadow, what does this tell us?
That the Outer core is liquid because S waves only go through Solids
THat the Core is Gas.
P-waves travel slightly faster in the core, what does this show?
That the core is Solid.
That the core is Gas.
S-waves go through mantle, what does this show?
That the Mantle is solid.
That the Mantle is Liquid.
