Methods of Subordination

Subordination is a device for avoiding the use of [blank_start]short, choppy sentences[blank_end] and the overuse of [blank_start]compound sentences[blank_end].

To subordinate an idea, phrase, or clause, you must make it [blank_start]depend upon[blank_end] a [blank_start]main clause or complete sentence[blank_end].

The methods of subordination are: [blank_start]prepositional phrases[blank_end], [blank_start]verbal phrases[blank_end], [blank_start]dependent clauses[blank_end], the [blank_start]appositive[blank_end], and the [blank_start]nominative absolute[blank_end].
