Understanding the assessment objectives for imaginative writing

How many assessment objectives will your response to the imaginative writing task be marked against?

Below are the two assessment objectives for the imaginative writing tasks in section B of Paper 1. Label each objective with the correct number and simplified explanations.

Both assessment objectives test your ability to use sentences and paragraphs to organise and structure your writing effectively.

Both assessment objectives test your ability to construct and use the full range of sentence structures to achieve particular effects in your writing. Please choose the 3 sentences structures we use in English.

Complete these simplified versions of the assessment objectives for the imaginative writing tasks by choosing the correct words and phrases from the drop-down menus to fill the gaps. A05: Write a in a [blank_start]smooth, flowing way[blank_end] that [blank_start]captures and holds[blank_end] your readers' attention. Use [blank_start]specific[blank_end] language and structural techniques that are [blank_start]appropriate[blank_end] to the SPAF of the task you have chosen to do, including [blank_start]figurative devices[blank_end], that allow you to present your ideas in a way that is [blank_start]interesting[blank_end] but keeps the meaning clear to the reader. Look at the wording of A06 below and then choose the words which tell you that you need to use a varied vocabulary and spell correctly throughout your response. A06: Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Please choose two words from the list.

Look at this imaginative writing task: Look at images A and B. Write about feeling lost. Your response could be real or imagined. You may base your response on one of the images. Now choose the phrase that tells you that your response does not have to be based on something that actually happened and the one word which tells you that using the images as stimuli is optional.

Whichever task you choose to respond to in section B of Paper 1, your response must be written using Standard English. What is Standard English?

When responding to the imaginative writing tasks you must first choose an appropriate [blank_start]form[blank_end] to write in. This could be a [blank_start]narrative[blank_end], a [blank_start]description[blank_end] or a [blank_start]monologue[blank_end]. Whichever form you choose you must write in [blank_start]continuous prose[blank_end] which means oragnising your writing into a series of linked, flowing [blank_start]paragraphs[blank_end] written using [blank_start]Standard English.[blank_end] You may include some [blank_start]dialogue[blank_end] in your response if you choose to write a [blank_start]narrative[blank_end] but you should keep any [blank_start]dialogue[blank_end] to a [blank_start]minimum[blank_end] as [blank_start]dialogue[blank_end] is not generally written in paragraphs and tends to include [blank_start]colloquial[blank_end] language. Remember that you must [blank_start]never[blank_end] provide a [blank_start]poem[blank_end] or a [blank_start]play script[blank_end] in response to the imaginative writing tasks as these [blank_start]forms[blank_end] do not allow you to write in continuous prose.

You must only provide a response to one of the tasks on the exam paper.
