Thetis laments Achilles’ approaching death, saying she [blank_start]can do nothing to prevent it[blank_end].

Thetis asks Achilles the reason for his sorrow, and Achilles tells her [blank_start]of the death of Patroclus[blank_end].

Achilles says he’s lost the will to live other than [blank_start]to kill Hector[blank_end].

Achilles mourns his previous inaction, and says that he is now ready to accept his fate by [blank_start]revenging himself on the Trojans[blank_end].

Thetis observes that Achilles no longer has any armor of his own, and tells him that she will [blank_start]go to the smith god Hephaestus[blank_end].

She tells Achilles to [blank_start]stay out of battle[blank_end] until the next dawn, when she will return with splendid new arms.

The sea nymphs [blank_start]return home[blank_end] as Thetis speeds to Olympus.

On the battlefield, the Achaeans continue the retreat of [blank_start]Patroclus’ body[blank_end].

Hector is close to seizing Patroclus’ body. Iris informs Achilles that he [blank_start]must help defend Patroclus[blank_end].

Achilles tells Iris that he has no arms for war. Iris tells Achilles to [blank_start]simply show himself[blank_end] in order to strike fear into the Trojans.

Achilles appears on the Achaean rampart, crowned by Athena with [blank_start]a golden cloud[blank_end].

Achilles [blank_start]gives his war cry[blank_end] and the Trojans panic.

The Achaeans take the opportunity to finally [blank_start]pull Patroclus’ body to safety[blank_end].
