As the Achaeans prepare for battle, Zeus [blank_start]summons the gods to a council[blank_end].

Zeus tells the assembled gods that they may return to the battlefield and [blank_start]help the sides they support[blank_end].

Zeus remarks that if the gods do not intervene, Achilles may [blank_start]overpower the Trojans and sack the city[blank_end].

Battle breaks out, and Achilles searches everywhere for [blank_start]Hector[blank_end].

Apollo, taking the form of the Trojan Lycaon, urges Aeneas to [blank_start]attack Achilles[blank_end].

Hera, seeing Aeneas approach Achilles, asks Athena and Poseidon [blank_start]to help her give support to the Achaeans[blank_end].

Poseidon replies that their side is much stronger, and that it would be better if the gods [blank_start]watched the battle from the sidelines[blank_end]. The gods take seats overlooking the battle, each contingent on opposite sides.

Aeneas and Achilles [blank_start]prepare to fight[blank_end].

Achilles taunts Aeneas, recalling the time when Aeneas [blank_start]ran from his fury[blank_end]. Aeneas replies that Achilles cannot frighten him and recites to him [blank_start]the lineage of Troy[blank_end].

The two battle and Achilles immediately overpowers Aeneas. Achilles nearly kills him, but Poseidon [blank_start]pities Aeneas and his lineage[blank_end].

Against the wishes of Hera and Athena he [blank_start]rescues Aeneas[blank_end], lifting him away from Achilles and placing him elsewhere on the battlefield.

Apollo speaks to Hector, instructing him not to [blank_start]fight Achilles in front of the ranks[blank_end], as Achilles will surely kill him.

Achilles kills several Trojans, [blank_start]including Polydorus[blank_end], Hector’s brother.

Achilles is too strong for Hector, and [blank_start]Apollo is forced to save him[blank_end], shielding the Trojan as Achilles charges him repeatedly. Hector is whisked away by Apollo.

Achilles continues on his murderous warpath, [blank_start]“like inhuman fire raging.”[blank_end]

He kills several Trojans, [blank_start]letting no man be taken alive[blank_end].
