Frage Antworten
1) Name the 3 parts of the bone structure and define its place. Diaphysis – Shaft of a long bone, its is long and cylindrical, the outer layer of the compact bone. The Medullary cavity containing yellow bone marrow. The Epiphyses forms the proximal and distal ends of a long bone The Metaphyses (Meta=between) is the growth in the length that occurs at the growth plate.(also known as the epiphyseal plate).
2) What does the epiphysis contain? Hyaline cartilage and this forms an “ epiphyseal growth plate ”. The growth plate is always active in dividing and causing bone to elongate from each end.
3) What happens to the epiphyseal cartilage in adults? No longer present and elongation (growth) of bones has stopped. This then becomes an epiphyseal line as the growing cartilage is replaced by calcified bone.
4) What is the Periosteum? A white double layered membrane that covers the external surface of bone if it isn’t already covered with articular cartilage. Tough fibrous layer Inner layer has osteoblasts = helps bone growth in thickness Rich supply of blood by vessels that penetrate the bone and enter to the medullary cavity Rich in sensory nerves
5) Describe the function of the periosteum Protects bone, Point of attachment for ligaments and tendons , Nourishes bone tissue, helps repair fractures.
6) Name the different tissues in the skeletal system. For bone; Compact and Spongy. For Cartilage; Hyaline and Fibrocartilage.
7) Describe compact bone It is dense, and smooth, outer layer. Forms the external surface of bones but only the shaft of the long bones.
8) Describe the function of the Compact bone. Protects and supports, resists stress of weight and movement
9) Describe the Spongy Bone In the interior of bones; inside ends of long bones and interior of other bones. Honeycomb of trabeculae orientated along lines of stress.
10) Describe the function of the Spongy bones Provides tissue support and its lightweight. Houses red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow.
