What is metabolism? | The sum of all the chemical reactions that happen in an organism. |
What are some examples of Metabolism? (In the body) | -Digestion of food -Aerobic and anaerobic respiration -Protein synthesis |
What are some examples of Metabolism? (In a plant and algal cells) | -Photosynthesis |
What is a breakdown reaction? | Makes molecules smaller and often less complicated, requires not much energy from respiration. |
What are examples of breakdown reactions? | -Protein breakdown -Amino Acid breakdown |
What is Protein breakdown? | When you have more protein molecules, than the cell requires. They then breakdown into Amino Acids. Which diffuse from high concentration to a lower concentration. |
What is Amino Acid breakdown? | In the liver Amino Acids go through a breakdown reaction. An enzyme removes an amine group, which breaks it down to urea. |
What is a Synthesis Reaction? | This makes larger and more complicated molecules requiring energy from respiration. |
What are the examples of Synthesis Reactions? | -Reactions of glucose -making lipids -protein synthesis |
Explain Reaction of Glucose | Glucose can be converted to insoluble starch which is stored or converted to cellulose and used for cell walls and growth. Animals covert it to glycogen which is stored in the liver. |
Explain Making Lipids | They are made from 3 molecules of fatty acids and 1 of glycerol |
