14th Amendment (1868) Provided constitutional protection of the citizenship extended to African Americans in the Civil Rights Act of 1866.
15th Amendment (1869) Guaranteed that states couldn't deny the right to vote for any male citizen based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Congress vs Johnson Because Johnson opposed the Reconstruction Acts, Congress passed laws to limit Presidential Authority. Tenure of Office Act stated that the President couldn't remove government officials without Senate approval. Johnson suspended Secretary of War, and as a result Congress voted to impeach Johnson.
