Frage Antworten
Why do multicellular organisms need a constant, rapid supply of glucose and oxygen? Multicellular organisms have a low SA:V ratio and a higher metabolic rate; many are very active This means a large number of cells are respiring very quickly CO₂ also needs to be removed from cells quickly
What are the different types of circulatory systems? Single Double Closed Open
What is a single circulatory system? Blood only passes through the heart once for each complete circuit of the body
Give an example of an organism with a single circulatory system Fish - the heart pumps blood to the gills (to pick up oxygen) and then to the rest of the body
What is a double circulatory system? Blood passes through the heart twice
Give an example of an organism with a double circulatory system Mammals - right side pumps to the lungs, the left side pumps to the rest of the body. This makes the blood travel faster, so O₂ is delivered to tissues more quickly
What is a closed circulatory system? The heart pumps blood into arteries which branch out into capillaries where O₂ and C₆H₁₂O₆ diffuse into body cells
TRUE OR FALSE: All vertebrates have a closed circulatory system where blood is enclosed inside blood vessels TRUE
What is an open circulatory system? Blood is not enclosed in blood vessels all the time; it flows freely through the body cavity. It does NOT supply the cells with O₂ - this is done by the tracheal system
TRUE OR FALSE: All invertebrates have an open circulatory system FALSE Only some do (e.g. insects)
Complete the sentence: An insect's heart is ___________; it contracts in a ________, pumping blood into the main artery (which opens up into the ______ ________) An insect's heart is SEGMENTED; it contracts in a WAVE, pumping blood into the main artery (which opens up into the BODY CAVITY)
