The 5 Approaches to Directing 1. Play Analysis 2. Communication 3. Design 4. Acting 5. Critiquing
Composition The arrangement of people n a stage group. There are 4 elements: EMPHASIS, SEQUENCE, STABILITY and BALANCE.
Emphasis Factor of composition. The 8 methods to obtain emphasis are body position, area, plane, level, contrast, space, repetition, and focus.
Direct Focus Includes actual line (sweep to focal point), visual line (follows actor line of vision), and triangles which can be different sizes or forms.
Counter Focus When some people are looking at the emphatic person and some are giving indirect focus. Not as strong.
Kinds of Emphasis There are 4 kinds of emphasis: direct (important person), duo-emphasis (2 important people), secondary (main character of scene) and diversified (characters alternate importance).
Stability Factor of composition. A factor that ties down the stage. Up stage has more weight than downstage. Triangles can add stability.
Sequence Factor of composition. Tying together the units onstage by space. Can be equal distance or different distances apart--always has a pattern.
Balance Factor of composition. Equalizing weight on the stage with setting, furniture and lights. Can be symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, esthectic, or picturization.
Symmetrical Balance When the groups are an equal distance from the centre line.
Asymmetrical Balance When the groups are identical based on a point on either side of the stage. Not equal distance from the centre line.
Esthectic A balancing of equal emphasis. Can do this through colour ( line, mass, and form.
Picturization Each moment in the play, the inner meaning or subtext, the authors concept. Steps are: analyze, determine mood, express mood, visualize background, blocking, composition, emotions.
Movement Levels (low to high is strong), length (short distance is strong), stage areas (to DC is strongest), ground plan (entrance UC strong, exit DR strong), (stage L to R is strong), (parallel and perpendicular movement is strong).
Kinds of Movement Story (necessary action), background (atmosphere), character (type of character), and technical (composition).
