Frage Antworten
Features of solids -Atoms/molecules arranged to need the lowest possible energy -Some solids can have more than one possible arangement
Graphite and diamond Graphite and diamond have different properties even though they are both made up of carbon atoms. This is due to the bonds between the atoms.
Metals- properties -Metals have little difference in electronegativity -Will share electrons giving them conductive properties (sea of electrons)
London (dispersion forces) -A (temporary) dipole is induced as there is a positive and negative end as electrons move -Very weak forces -Holds liquids together -Common to all molecules
Dipole-dipole forces -Permanent dipoles in molecules due to a difference in their electronegativity -Weak force
Hydrogen bonding -Does not involve a chemical bond -Involves a strong dipole-dipole interaction -Occurs between H and strongly electronegtive elements (F,O,N) -Much weaker than covalent bond
Features of liquids -Greater mobility than solids -Greater K.E. -Weaker intermolecular interactions -Chemical reactions occur faster
Features of polymers -Made of repeating units -Have a monomer repeated n times
Polymer examples -PVC -PE -PMMA
Polymer reactions -Addition -Condensation: Results in production of a polymer and small molecule (H20, HCl)
