What is the 'Sanctity Of Life'? A Christian and Muslim belief that life is a gift from god.
What is the 'Quality Of Life'? A measure of fulfilment.
What is conception? The moment the sperm fertilises the egg. Catholics and Muslims believe this is when all life begins.
What is 'Quickening'? The first detectable move of the foetus.
What is 'Ensoulment'? At some point in the foetus life it receives it's soul.
What does it mean to be 'Infertile'? Unable to have children.
What is fertility treatment? Medical procedures to help infertile couples have children.
What is IVF and what does it stand for? It stands for In Vetro Fertilisation and it's a scientific method of making a woman pregnant that does not involve sex.
What is a test tube baby? A term used for a baby created outside of the woman's body.
What is 'AI' and what does it stand for? It stands for Artificial Insemination and its when sperm is medically inserted into the woman's uterus.
What is 'AIH' and what does it stand for? Artificial Insemination using the Husband's sperm.
What is 'AID' and what does it stand for? Artificial Insemination using a Donor's sperm.
What is surrogacy? A fertilised egg is inserted into another woman's womb.
What is transplant surgery? When someone else's organs are put into a patient.
What is a blood transfusion? When a patient is given extra blood as part of an operation.
What is 'Human Genetic Engineering'? The modification of gene make up to change the features of a human.
What is 'Embryology'? The study of human embryos.
What is an embryo? A fertilised egg at about 12-14 days when implanted into the wall of the womb.
What is a 'Designer Baby'? Babies with gender and characteristics chosen by their parents. Currently illegal in the UK but legal in America.
What are 'Stem Cells'? A cell, most often taken from a 4-5 day embryo, whose role in the body has not yet been determined.
What is a saviour sibling? A sibling that is genetically compatible for a sick child.
What is cloning? A scientific way to make another copy of a plant or an animal using exactly the same gene make up.
