Give one feature of high culture and a study to support it. | One feature of high culture is that it is practiced by the upper and middle classes. This is supported by Bordieu who argues that the upper and middle classes are trained to appreciate and understand high culture. Individuals learn about high culture in upper/middle class families and in educational systems, especially higher education. Bordieu argues that knowledge and appreciation of high culture are necessary for gaining access to high salaries and high living standards and membership to the dominant class. Therefore pupils from upper and middle class background have a built in advantage because they are often socialised by their families into the dominant culture which includes an awareness of & appreciation for classical literature & music, fine art & theatre. |
Give one feature of high culture and a study to support it. | A feature of high culture is that it is considered superior to popular culture. This is supported by Leavis who argues that high culture is superior to popular culture, or the culture of the masses. He feared that high culture is being eroded by the spread of mass culture through the media. He believed that there was a risk that media such as television, would lower the cultural standards of the population and turn the people away from the more intellectually demanding cultural forms, such as English literature. High culture is something, according to Leavis that needs to be protected. This concern cann be seen in schools for e.g. in English, Shakespeare is a part of the formal curriculum. |
