Accommodation Grading Schemes Used to provide tourists with information about the quality of the accommodation they are booking.
All-inclusive Meals, hotel facilities (e.g. spa), drinks.
Bed and Breakfast Accommodation, normally in a family home, when a set price is charged for the room and breakfast.
Chalets A small cabin or house used by holidaymakers.
Domestic Tour Operators Provide package holidays which take place within the UK.
Full board The room and all meals are included.
Half board Cost of room, breakfast and one other meal, usually dinner is included.
Heritage and Cultural Attractions Historic properties, churches, cathedrals, museums and galleries.
Home exchanges Alternative travel accommodation, two tourists agree to swap homes for a set period of time, with no monetary exchange taking place.
Hostels Voluntary, often near national parks to encourage tourists to enjoy the scenery. This is often shared accommodation at a reasonable price.
Inbound Tour Operators Sell package holidays to the UK. Based on heritage and castles.
Lodges Recent development - developed from the motel.Room only, no meals included and it is a standard room.
Mass-Market Tour Operators Specialise in selling high volumes of holidays, mainly to short-haul coastal destinations.
Motels A roadside hotel designed primarily for motorists, typically having the rooms arranged in low blocks with parking directly outside.
Natural Attractions Term used to identify natural as opposed to purpose-built attractions. For example a mountain is a natural visitor attraction.
Network Rail Company that owns and maintains the railway tracks in the UK. Owns and operates 18 railway stations.
Purpose-built Attractions Attractions built with the purpose of attracting tourists to them. They aim to make a profit.
Resort Condominiums International (RCI) An exchange agency for people who own timeshares so that they can exchange the weeks.
Retail Travel Agencies Sells a wide range of tourism products. Holidays, flights, travel insurance, car hire, currency exchange and theatre tickets.
Room Only Guest has only paid for the room - no meals or drinks are included in the charge.
Specialist Operators Provide holidays to a specific destination or offer adventure tours.
Support Services Organisations which offer support to commercial organisations providing travel and tourism products.
Timeshares A company builds accommodation and sells time slots to tourists. The tourist will then get an apartment for however long they paid for e.g. one week.
Tour Operators Assemble inclusive tours by buying components such as flights and accommodation and selling them as a package.
Train Operating Companies (TOCs) A group of private sector companies providing scheduled rail services in the UK.
Villas A large country home on its own grounds.
National Tourist Boards Funded mainly from government. VisitBritain promotes Britain and encourages tourists to visit.
Regional Tourist Boards (RTBs) Develops future plans for tourism and marketing.
Regional Development Agencies (RDA) Promotes economical development.
Tourist Information Centres (TICs) Tourists go here for information about the destination they are visiting. Provides information about local attractions and accommodation.
