what do computers have at their cores | a core processor |
where do computers store things | the memory |
what do they use to move things around | buses |
what do computers use communicate with external devices | interfaces |
what does computer architecture mean? | the structure of the computer |
what is hard ware? what is a device? | are all the physical parts of the computer system is a single piece of hardware |
the structure of a computer system contains what? | input devices- mouse processor storage devices- hard drive memory-RAM and ROM output devices-monitor |
what is ROM? | Read only memory |
what is RAM? | random access memory |
what is the difference between RAM and ROM | RAM doesn't store things when computer is off but ROM does |
what does the processor do? | the processor does all the sorting, calculating and decision making goes on |
what is software? | software is the name given to a set of intsructions for the computer |
what must the memory do for the processor? | it must be supplied with instructions from the memory, one at a time and in the correct order |
what happens when you change the program on a computer? | it allows the computer to carry out a totally new task |
name the parts of a processor | control unit arithmetic and logic unit registers |
what does the control unit do? | it controls all other parts of the processor to make sure that the program instructions of the computer are carried out in the correct order |
what is the job of the arithmetic and logic unit? | it is to carry out the arithmetic operations such as add (+), times (*), subtract (-) and divide (/). it also makes logical decisions such as AND, OR and NOT |
where are things stored? | the memory |
what is the memory made of? | a collection of chips |
each time data is stored in the memory what happens to it? | it is stored in he memory in a storage location at a specific adress |
what two kinds of chips do you get in the memory | RAM and ROM |
what are differences between RAM and ROM? | RAM holds data and programs which are loaded from backing storage while ROM stores programs and data permanently even when the computer is off. RAM stores programs and data temporarily, only when their is power |
why do you need plenty of RAM? | extra RAM improves performance it also allows the computer to have larger programs loaded into RAM at one time it is faster to process files held in RAM |
what kinds of buses do you get? | Address DATA Control |
what does a data bus do? | it is used to specify which memory location is to be used to read data from or write data to |
what does a data bus do | is used to carry data from a memory location to the processor and vise versa |
what does a control bus do? | it is used to send out signals to initiate events such as reading an item of data from a memory location into the processor or writing an item of data from |
what does an interface provide | it provides a link between a peripheral and the CPU which allows them to communicate |
which is slower the processor or peripheral devices | the peripheral is the slower one. the interface has to compensate for differences in speed e.g. slow printer fast processor . |
