The need for textiles Textiles plays an important part in our lives and are essential for 1) General well- being 2) Comfort 3) Decoration 4) Protection from the elements
Textile products Textiles is a general term used to describe any product that is made from a fabric. That fabric can be knitted, woven or bonded. Textiles are all around us and there are many different kinds of textiles products.
The main kinds of textiles products -Toys and Games. -Indoor and outdoor clothing. -Other clothing eg underwear, socks. -Craft/ one off products eg wall hangings, bespoke clothing. -Interior products eg. curtains, bedding. -Accessories eg. hats, bags, gloves, shoes.
Advanced uses Textile materials are also used for a wide range of industrial purposes as well as other advanced uses. -Roads -Civil engineering -Transport -Flooring -Medicine -Agriculture -Architecture -Specialised protective clothing
Sewing machines There are different types of sewing machines dependent on the task that you want to do
Standard sewing machines- You will use it to join fabrics and do simple embroidery. they have limited features.
Embroidery machine This is like a standard sewing machine expect that it has a lot of different decorative stitches and features that you can see.
Computerised sewing machine This is an advanced sewing machine with many features. Its main difference is that it is controlled by a computer interface and can also be connected to a computer. Designs can be digitised and developed then sent to the machine for sewing.
Over Locker This is a specialised sewing machine that is used for joining and finishing fabrics giving them a professional finish. It can also be used for adding decorative edging to fabrics.
Knitted machines Knitting machines are used for knitting either patterned or textured fabrics. They are used to create garments, fabrics or textile products and can be linked to a computer.
Weaving Looms There are different types of looms that are used to weave fabrics. They can also be linked to computers.
Dressmakers mannequin Mannequins are used to fit garments onto. They can be adjusted to different measurements and are available for all different shapes and sizes.
Scissors/ pinking shears There are many types of scissors used in textiles, each for different purposes. Pinking shears are a special type that can be used for finishing of edges of fabric to prevent them from fraying or for decorating edges of fabrics.
Tape measure/ ruler Tape measures and rulers are used for measuring patterns or garments. Tape measures can be curved easily making them ideal for textiles.
Embroidery frame Embroidery frames are used to hold fabrics in place when sewing. They can be used for hand embroidery work or can be used to keep designs and fabrics in place when doing embroidery on sewing machines.
Tailors chalk/ marker pens Tailors chalk is used to make marks on fabrics. It can easily be rubbed off and is available in different colours. There are also other types of fabric marker pens that can be used, which creates marks that disappear when the fabrics are washed.
Pins and needles Pins are used to hold fabrics together, when cutting out fabrics. There are different needles used in sewing, some are for hand embroidery and others are for use on sewing machines. There are different sewing machine needles for different types of fabrics.
Dyes There is a range of dyes used in textiles. Some dyes can only be used on natural fabrics (such as reactive dyes and acid dyes). Other dyes can only be used on synthetic fabrics (such as disperse dyes). You will need to know about the fabric to when you want to apply colour to enable you to choose the correct dyes.
Inks There is a range of inks used in textiles depending on whether the fabric is natural or synthetic. They are normally used to draw onto the fabrics.
Paints There are different paints that can be used in textiles. Some paints create 3d textures on fabrics. There are specialist paints that can be used on fabrics such as silk.
Elastics Elastics are used in textiles for different purposes such as to hold fabrics in place or creating openings that are flexible. They can also be used for embroidery and special effects.
Threads There is a range of threads for use in textiles. Hand embroidery threads are for decorative work. There is also a range of sewing machine threads. You can select threads depending on the fabric and the end use of the product.
Knitting Yarns Knitting yarns are available for hand and machine knitting. They are available in different weights and thicknesses. They can be made of different fibres.
Fastening/ Velcro There are a range of fastenings that can be used in textiles and fashion. One of the most commonly used is Velcro (often called hook an loop fastenings).
Bindings Bindings are available in different colours and are usually described as narrow fabrics. They can be used in a decorative or functional way.
Interfacing Interfacings are used to reinforce or add stability to fabrics. They can be applied using heat. There are different weights and types are available depending on the end use of the fabric or product.
