Frage Antworten
What are the four main sources of water? Rivers, lakes, reservoirs and aquifers (wells and bore holes).
Name one thing that water is important for apart from drinking, washing and other jobs in the home? Used for the chemical industry in large amounts for cooling, as a solvent and as a cheap raw material
What can untreated water contain? insoluble particles, pollutants microbes and dissolved salts and minerals.
What would happen in a typical water treatment process? Sedimentation - the water settles to allow the insoluble particles to sink Filtration - to remove very fine particles Chlorination - to kill the micro-organisms in the water
What is one advantage and one disadvantage with distillation? Advantages - Gets rid of any soluble materials which could be poisonous Disadvantage - Lots of energy used so a very expensive process
Why don't we use sea water as drinking water? The process of distillation would cost more than it is worth as it would require huge amounts of energy to heat it.
What kind of pollutants can be found in water? Pesticides from spraying crops near to water supply, lead from old piping, nitrates from the run off of fertilisers.
The dissolved ions of some salts are easy to identify as they will undergo precipitation reaction. A precipitation reaction occurs when an insoluble solid is made from mixing two solutions together. Sulphates can be detected using barium chloride solution. What colour is the precipitate? white
Silver nitrate solution is used to detect halide ions. Halides are ions made by the halogens. With silver nitrate what colour precipitates do chlorides, bromides and iodides form? chlorides - white precipitate bromides - cream precipitate iodides - pale yellow precipitate
