ONS Office of National Statistics -Responsible for conducting the Census. -Questionnaires sent to household every 10yrs. -Closed questions +govt studies. -Representative of UK population. -Must by law be completed and returned by post(prepaid). -Research into births,deaths,marriages. -Generated using administrative records from local and county-based authorities. - Reliable and valid because legal requirements e.g. birth, death, marriage registers.
Official statistics General Household Survey (GHS) Conducts interviews around 9.000 households a year, 16.000 respondends. Largely quantitative data (Statistical numerical) Govt dep and documents brought together into <Social Trends>
Non-official statistics use by Sociologists Not owned by government, independent companies, researchers, universities. e.g.Ipsos Mori (independent research org). Data which can be bought or downloaded. does work for govt + private companies e.g. Nokia + toyota Not entierly quantitative data. Methods: large sample size and surveys of one kind or another. Face to face interviews, telephone surveys, postal questionnaires , online surveys. CONS: work difficult to replicate
