How have you used new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages? Throughout the process of my A2 coursework I made sure that I was able to present and complete my work using several different media technologies within the research, planning and production tasks. This made my blog more interactive and user friendly as it is engaging for the audience. Using these different media technologies allowed me to further advance my skills from last year and to challenge myself into trying different software and hardware which will enhance and develop my knowledge and experience within media.
Research & Planning... Within the research and planning stages I used various different software technologies which enabled me to present my work onto the blog. I also, used several hardware technologies to help me carry out specific tasks.
"Search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet using the search engine Google." I used Google thoroughly throughout the process of my coursework to help me research existing trailers, magazines and posters which helped us identify the codes and conventions of these different products. I also used Google in order to research into different film genres. This enabled me to work with my group to find the genres that were most appealing to us, in the end we combined two genres together- crime and thriller. Google was used again to enable me to research into my target audience for the crime and thriller combination genre. From the research I could identify that there was not much difference within the target audience of these two genres which was very efficient. I also researched on Google the contents of these genres for example, fast paced editing, suspense, mystery, props etc. I then used Google to research into film distributors in order to choose one which would be suitable for my genre of film. I carried out all this research so that it could help me create a final realistic product.
"Upload a video of (someone or something) to the video-sharing website YouTube." I used YouTube to research existing trailers from the genre we chose. I then analysed these trailers to help me detect the codes and conventions of trailers within the genre, I also analysed the mise-en-scene, camera angles, editing, sound, unique selling points and the general contents of the trailers and how they are used to effectively engage the audience into watching the trailer. This research was very useful for me and my group as it was very specific to our genre and helped us widen our knowledge on the different techniques we would need to use in our own trailer for it to look professional and meet the needs of our target audience.
"A cloud-based (SaaS) presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas." I used Prezi to present my trailer analysis research onto the blog. Prezi is an online presentation software which allows you to choose a template you like and create your presentation. It is a more interactive and engaging way to present ideas and analysis etc. rather than a simple blog post.
"A free Web-based e-mail service currently being tested at Google that provides users with a gigabyte of storage for messages and provides the ability to search for specific messages." I used Gmail to have a back-up for all my work in case I lost the work. I also used Gmail to stay in contact with my group to discuss decisions. I used Gmail to gain feedback from my target audience.
"Users can upload files privately or publicly in the following file formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote or OpenDocument presentations. Slide decks can then be viewed on the site itself, on hand held devices or embedded on other sites." I used SlideShare to present my work onto the blog. I used SlideShare because it is a more interactive way to present my findings.
"A graphical word processing program that users can type with. It is made by the computer company Microsoft. The purpose of the MS Word is to allow the users to type and save documents." I used Word to do my work on and then upload it onto sites such as SlideShare. I also used Word to create questionnaires for my target audience to complete.
"A spreadsheet application developed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications." I used Excel to show results from my audience feedback gained from the questionnaires into a graph so the information is easier to read.
"A software package designed to create electronic presentations consisting of a series of separate pages or slides." I used PowerPoint the same way as I used Word to present my work on. I used PowerPoint to present the results from our questionnaires for our target audience. Also I uploaded the presentations onto SlideShare.
"An electronic device which is capable of receiving information (data) in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals." I used the computers at sixth form and at home to complete the research, planning and production process of my coursework. This is the most important hardware I used for my work. Without this I would not have been able to upload work onto the blog. To be able to do my work at all.
"A device that scans documents and converts them into digital data." I used the scanner to transfer hard copies of work onto the blog for example, the storyboard so that it can presented as an electronic copy.
"An electrically operated machine using a photographic method, as the electrostatic process, for making instant copies of written, drawn, or printed material." I used the photocopier to print out copies of my questionnaire to hand out to my target audience.
"A camcorder is an electronic device combining a video camera and a video recorder, typically used for consumer video recording." I used the camcorder in my research to film the focus groups that I had filmed of my target audience.
