System | An object or a group of objects. |
Dissipated | Spreading out and transfer of energy stores into less useful forms, often referred to as wasted energy. |
Lubricant | Anything which reduces the friction between two surfaces. |
Efficiency | Fraction of the energy supplied to a device which is transferred in a useful form. |
Thermal conductivity | A measure of how well a material conducts energy when it's heated. |
Specific heat capacity | Amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1°C. |
Conservation of energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transferred from one form to another or stored. |
Global warming | When carbon dioxide is given off through the burning of fossil fuels, the greenhouse effect increases leading to an increased global temperature. |
Gravitational field strength (g) | How many newtons of force are exerted on each kg of mass, it is measured in N/kg. In a question the value of g will be given. |
Joules (J) | The unit of energy |
Mass | The amount of matter in an object, it stays the same wherever you are (measure in kilograms). |
Non-renewable energy store | An energy source that will eventually run out e.g. fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) and nuclear fuel. |
Renewable energy resource | An energy resource that will not run out (is being or can be replenished as it is used) e.g. bio-fuel, wind, solar power etc. |
Power | The rate of which energy is transferred (how many joules per second are transferred), the power of 100W tells you 100J of energy transferred are transferred every second. |
Spring constant | A measure of how easy it would be to stretch or compress a material; the higher the spring constant, the stiffer the spring. It is measured in N/m. |
Sulphur dioxide | Gas given off when coal and oil are burned, this leads to the formation of acid rain. |
Watts (W) | The unit of power. |
Weight | The force acting on an object due to gravity, so it is different depending on the force of gravity. It is measured in newtons (N). |
Work done | This is the same as energy transferred, it is measured in joules (J). |
