Political Challenges Upper Canada and Lower Canada had different points of view. That resulted in many comprimises. Comprimises made neither side happy for example the Capital City changed every 5 years for 20 years. Queen Victoria finally named Ottawa the capital in 1854
Social Challenges Even though there was a Democracy the minorities influence on the government was suppressed. The roman catholic made up 25% of Toronto’s population and there was a significant black population they still had barely any impact. Groups of people with wealth, power and status were called Elites. You could only vote if you were a rich man who owned property; so most voters were rich white men. Women and people who rented homes, new immigrants and First Nations were left out of government decisions. Most Black people didn’t own property so they couldn’t vote. This meant that the government was ideal for rich white men.
Economic Challenges Due to the Industrial Revolution many people were replaced by machines in factories. Factory Workers worked long hours and were paid small daily wages. Skilled Laborers hurt the most. Products could be made cheaper and faster in factories. The working conditions in factories were terrible. Women and Children could work with being payed next to nothing. Workers created unions to try to get better pay or working conditions they occasionally went on strike. Also, when factories produced to many goods then they needed to export them which costed a lot of money.
