What is the POV? It is a dramatic monologue therefor its 1st person making it a bais view.
What is the ideology of the poem? Browning is outlining and highlighting how badly women were miss-treated- " that is my last duchess painted on the wall"
What is the characterisation of the poem? The husband is possessive and controlling." my last duchess on the wall" and he is also a powerful and respected man. " as if she ranked my gift of a 900 year old name with anybody's gift"
what is the destination of the poem? the poem has a secret listener who could be his new wife's father so he tried to explain that he wasn't the only bad person in the relationship she was sinful as well- "for calling up that spot of joy"
What is the context of the poem? The fact that she may have been unfaithful could be the reason why she is dead and why the duke is explaining him self- "or blush, at least she thanked men- good, but somehow- I do not know"
What is the setting of the poem? They are at a gathering and to put an end to the conversation he states " we'll meet company below"
What is the form of the poem? it comprises rhyming pentameter lines. the lines don't employ end-stops; rather they use enjambment. Consequently rhymes do not create a sense of closure but rather remains subtle drive behind the dukes speech.
historical background of the poem? poem harbours much significance: the Italian Renaissance held a particular fascination for browning and he represented the flowering of the aesthetic and the human alongside the religious and the moral which allows brown to explore sex violence ad aesthetics- the lushness of the language belies the fact that the duchess was punished for her actions.
