Frage Antworten
Definition of Stereotypes An oversimplified generalised set of ideas that we have about others that belong to a group.
Advantages of Stereotypes - helpful to make a snap judgement - help us remember information about others - people can respond appropriately - fit in with our own groups, and feel a sense of belonging
Disadvantages of Stereotypes - once learnt by children, are difficult to overcome - most stereotypes promote harmful images - stop us from seeing people for who they really are - lead people to view non-members of the group in a negative way
Definition of Prejudice A rigid set of views on certain groups or people.
Definition of Discrimination Treating someone due to the prejudice.
Practical Implication - most stereotypes promote harmful beliefs, people make mistakes about someone when meeting them for the first time, stop them from seeing what they're really like - stereotypes especially hard to overcome by children, learnt by observing and imitating role models in the media, however media is slowly changing
