Acids and Alkalies The pH Scale: What does it do? The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a chemical is. Numbers 1-6 on the pH scale mean the chemical is a acid, and numbers 8-14 mean the chemical is an alkali. Number 7 is neutral. The closer the number is to 7, the weaker the acid or alkali is.
Acids and Alkalies Litmus Paper: Why do we use it? Litmus paper changes color depending on whether it has acid or alkali on it. This color change is used to judge how strong the acid or alkali is using the pH scale. So it is useful to find out if a substance is acidic or alkaline.
Acids and Alkalies Litmus Paper: How do you tell the difference between acids and alkalies? Litmus paper that is blue turns red if it has an acidic substance on it. But red litmus paper turns blue when their is a alkaline substance on it. That is how you can tell if the chemical is an acid or an alkali using litmus paper.
Acids and Alkalies Universal Indicator: What is it? Universal indicator is similar to litmus paper in many ways as it tells us whether a substance is acidic or alkaline by changing color. We can tell by this color how strong the acid or alkali is according to the pH scale. Universal indicator, unlike litmus paper, is a liquid and just one tiny drop of it can instantly change according to the pH scale.
