EDUCATION WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1870 It was put into place through the need for a literate and numerate workforce.
Urbanization: cities and towns grew e.g. Newcastle, Hull and Birmingham. Education was later used to install 'values' into society.
ADVANTAGES - teaches basic skills needed -life skills/qualifications -social skills improve -life long process preparing people for a career -children learn societies values -equal opportunity to get an education -successful futures DISADVANTAGES -Government has too much control -claimed to be 'free' yet hidden costs -setting/streaming has negative effects -children can be set in terms of behavior -stress: GCSES, SATS, ALEVELS -time consuming process
PERSPECTIVES - Functionalist (positive) -Marxist (negative) Norms- unwritten rules/normal ways of doing things Values- something seemed/considered to be important
why are shared values important? - without them society would be dysfunctional -chaos and violence would break out -children would not be socialized properly (wouldn't know right/wrong) Meritocracy- an education system whereby everyone has an equal chance/opportunity to succeed and is rewarded for any hard work. Socialization- children go on to process norms and values of society.
